in the context of NEP-2020

Event: Seminar on Prospects of higher education in India in the context of NEP-2020

Date: 16th April 2024

Place: Exhibition Grounds Hyderabad

Introduction to seminar:

Higher education system is a eritical driver of the nation's progress India is believed to have had a system of higher education as early as 1000 BC. Unlike present day universities, these ancient learning centers were primarily concerned with dispersing Vedic education.

In Ancient India Gurukula System prevalled and prominent universities are Takshashila. Nalanda, Vikramshila and Vallabhi etc. These centers also played significant roles in higher education during ancient times, offering comprehensive curricula.

The first institution of higher learning set up by the British East India Company was the Calcutta Madrasa in 1781. This was followed by the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784, Benaras Sanskrit College in 1791 and Fort William College in 1800. With the Charter Act of 1813. the British Parliament officially declared Indian education as one of the duties of the state.

In 1857, the first three official universities were started in Bombay (Mumbai). Calcutta (Kolkata) and Madras (Chennai).

After 1980s several professional education institutions such as IITS, RECS/NITS. IIMs were established. These institutions drew inspiration from reputed universities In the United States and also received foreign funding.

As of now, India has the world's largest higher education institutions, with 1.168 registered universities and university-level institutions in India 45,473 colleges, 12002 Standalone Institutions which are specialized training centers. research institutes, and vocational schools. 341 universities Gender-Specific Institutions: 4.470 women-only colleges.

Certainly! Over the years, several committees and commissions such as Radhakrishnan Commission (1948-1949), Kothari Commission, Mudaliar Commission, National Policy on Education (1986), Knowledge Commission and finally NEP 2020have significantly influenced higher education in India andplayed pivotal roles in shaping policies, reforms, and advancements in higher education. Important committees are National Education Policy-2020 (NEP)is the initiative to address the significant issue of orientation of the Indian higher education system for its internationalization that would go a long way not only to improve quality, reachability to everyone and to make it globally competitive. The new policy replaces the 34 your old National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986.

NEP 2020 also aims to double the Gross Enrolment Rate (GER) in higher education by 2035 and improve and to make India as a global education hub.

For last few years, many reforms have been taken up andthese reforms are playing key role in restructuring of curriculum, transformation of teaching methodologies. and modification of support services extensive use of technology, and improving the standards/quality. Entry of foreign universities is being liberalized and many more changes are taking place in imparting HE. Online teaching, blended teaching. establishment of digital universities, use of Al etc. are other issues which go a long way in provision of quality education. These reforms are also planned to enable Indian HE institutions to face competition with universities at International level.

We can find UGC, AICTE, NCTE, AIU are working hard to make higher education in India competitive to any university at Global level.

Higher education is facing several challenges such as Quality Assurance. Access and Equity, Employability. Infrastructure and Funding. Research and Innovation.

Major advantage or India is availability of young talent pool is estimated to become the world's largest by 2030 and participation of Private Sector. It is estimated that over 60% of higher education institutions are now promoted by the private sector. Such a situation This has led to rapid growth of universities and colleges.

It is worth to learn the latest developments taking place in Higher education in India in the context of NEP2020. We have eminent academics who are also successful educational administrators, who will be able to give us the insights of Prospects of higher education in India.
