About OGA

OGA History

The genesis of Osmania Graduates' Association can be traced back to almost a century. The existence of an organization for such a long time, certainly signifies, particularly, for those associated with it, that is the 'Osmanians'. The History of Osmania Graduates' Association is a saga of selfless service and memorable achievements of dedicated Osmanians in the field of education. The social, educational, economic and political conditions of the society under a feudal rule of Nizam State were more archaic when compared to other princely states in India. Literacy level among the masses was very low. As such there were no political parties or any other forum to reflect and mobilise the aspirations of people and project the shocking economic disparties and plan to improve the situation. The policies of the feudal government were not oriented towards the needs and aspirations of the people in general. Keeping these facts in view, the Osmanians of first generation explored an idea of starting an association to address these problems. As a result, the Osmania Graduates’ Association was formed on 25th November 1932 with the sole objective of promoting overall development of erstwhile Hyderabad state. Prominent among founders of OGA were stalwarts like Nawab Fakhar Nawaz Jung. (First President) Dr. Mohamad Ghouse, Sri Shankarji, Sri Abdul Rahim, Raja Rai Gurudas, Sri Kaleemuddin, Ansari, Sri Mohd. Ali Khan, Sri Mir Ahmed Ali Khan and Sri Mirza Sukur Baig. To achieve the set goals, the association channelized its activities through several committees, of which the Municipal, Political and Economic committees deserve special mention.

A graduate in early thirties carried tremendous dignity, social status and responsibility. The Graduates were enlightened and detached from narrow social norms. They were indeed treated as enlightened elite. This naturally motivated them to widen their perception and explore the possibilities to work in social, economic & political fields. After prolonged sessions of deliberations and discussions an Education Committee was formed. subsequently in 1938, Economic Committee was formed, which in its turn founded Exhibition Society in the same year. During the same period a Political Committee was also formed. Education Committee for some time published a monthly Magazine. The Political Committee had become defunct as many Osmania Graduates became government servants, and it went out of existence. However Economic Committee & Exhibition Society continued their work contributing service to economic, commercial and small & medium industrial development and cottage industries in this part of the state is so wide on stupendous, that volumes could be written. However, here it is the continuity growth and service rendered by O.G.A deserves to be highlighted.

The Economic committee was formed in 1936 to promote Economic and Industrial development in the state. In turn, the Economic committee formed Exhibition Society in 1938 to create a platform to the artisans and small scale Industrialists of the state to exhibit their skills and get market for their products. To achieve this goal, the Economic committee initiated the idea of holding an industrial exhibition in Hyderabad. The Exhibition became instantly popular drawing huge crowds and appreciation of the visitors and the elite of the city. The "Numaish" as it came to be called is synonymous with Hyderabadi life and culture has gained considerable popularity and the status of All India Industrial Exhibition by 1949. It has been acclaimed as the largest multi purpose industrial exhibition in variety, scope and display in the country. The Income generated through the Industrial Exhibitions is utilized for the educational development of the region. Thus, with the financial support of Exhibition Society, the Osmania Graduates' Association is realizing its objectives by providing educational opportunities in the region.
